In 1986, the first Savannah cat was born in the home of Judee Frank as the result of an accidental crossing between a serval and a Siamese cat. Originally called Miracle, this F1 kitten was later renamed Savannah, giving the breed its name. Savannah cats are a hybrid breed that are a cross between a serval, a wild African cat, and a domestic cat. The first generation of Savannah cats are typically bred from a male serval and a female domestic cat, which results in a kitten that is 50% serval and 50% domestic cat.As Savannahs are produced by crossbreeding servals and domestic cats, each generation of Savannahs is marked with a filial number. For example, the cats produced directly from a serval × domestic cat cross are termed F1, and they are 50% serval. The F1 Savannah cat is a first generation domestic Savannah. The Savannah Cat’s personality is playful, adventurous and loyal. Unlike most cats, they love to play in water and can even be trained to walk on a leash and play fetch. They are known for being great with kids and other animals. They can range in size from small to large, but they all have long legs, big ears, and long necks. While Savannahs may look like they could be ferocious, they are gentle and loving creatures. Savannahs are highly intelligent and therefore easy to train, but keep in mind that they require a lot of attention, so they’re not very well suited for a family that’s not around them very often.
